Day trips

One day around
Longteng Bridge

The combination that works is small: the bridge, Shengxing Station and one taste of Sanyi. What actually decides the shape of the day is whether you have booked the Old Mountain Line rail bike — that single choice sets the rhythm everything else fits around.

Planning rule

Fix the booking first

The short version

Three stops, one story

Everything here belongs to the same abandoned railway. The bridge is the earthquake monument, Shengxing is the station that served the same line, and the rail bike is what reopened part of the trackbed. Staying on that theme is what makes a short day feel complete rather than scattered.

The monument

Red-brick piers and broken arches on County Road 49, free to visit, 30 to 60 minutes at the main viewpoint.

Shengxing Station

The old mountain line station at about 402 m, with an old street that works as the lunch stop of the day.

Getting there

Three plans

Three ways to spend the day

Pick the one that matches your group rather than the one with the most stops. Times below show the shape of the day, not a published schedule — the only fixed point is your booked rail bike departure.

The rail bike day

You have children with you, or the rail bike is the reason you came.

  1. ≈ 09:00 Longteng Bridge The arches and the steel bridge, before the car park fills.
  2. Booked slot Old Mountain Line rail bike Route B or C from Longteng Station, or Route A from the Shengxing Station area.
  3. ≈ 13:00 Shengxing old street Lunch and a proper break rather than another viewpoint.
  4. Afternoon Shengxing Station The timber station building and the platform, a short walk from the old street.
  5. If time allows Sanyi woodcarving district Hakka food and woodcarving on your way back down, not a separate trip.

Your booked departure becomes the fixed point. Everything else is arranged around it — including which of the three stations you drive to.

The no-rail-bike day

You would rather avoid tunnels and elevated track, or you want a lot of unhurried eating and strolling.

  1. Morning Longteng Bridge The main viewpoint, the broken arches and the steel bridge beyond.
  2. Late morning Shengxing Station The old mountain line station and its timber building.
  3. ≈ 12:30 Shengxing old street Lunch, then browse. The natural rest point of the day.
  4. Afternoon Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum An indoor stop that answers why this town is about wood.
  5. Late afternoon Shuimei woodcarving street Shops and workshops, close to the road back to the freeway.

This version moves freely because nothing is booked. It suits older visitors and anyone who dislikes fixed departure times.

The photography and history day

You are here for the light, the brickwork and the old line rather than for a family outing.

  1. Early Longteng Bridge, north section The brick piers and the valley before the light turns flat.
  2. Mid-morning Yutengping Iron Bridge viewpoint The 1938 replacement line and its relationship to the brick remains.
  3. Midday Shengxing Station Station building, platform and the tunnel mouth.
  4. Afternoon Tai'an Old Station An optional extension further along the old mountain line if you have the time.
  5. If you stay local Back to Shengxing and the woodcarving district Keep the afternoon in Sanyi instead of adding another drive.

Start with the north section while the light is still soft, then follow the old line theme. How far you go depends on how much driving you accept.

If you are riding, decide the route and the boarding station before you plan anything else — it moves the whole day.

Sequencing

Working backwards from a booking

If you have a rail bike reservation, stop planning forwards. Start from the departure time and build the rest of the day around it, in this order.

  1. 01 Fix the rail bike check-in first Ticket collection and boarding time are the only fixed points in the day. Write them down before you plan anything else, and note which station they belong to.
  2. 02 Then reserve time for parking and walking The stations and the monument are close on the map and slow in reality. Parking, walking between viewpoints and waiting for a space are all part of the day, not overhead.
  3. 03 Keep same-area stops on the same side of check-in Put the monument before or after your departure depending on which station you board from, instead of crossing the valley twice.
  4. 04 Do not schedule lunch tightly Shengxing old street is the natural lunch stop, and it is also where queues build at the weekend. A generous lunch window protects the rest of the afternoon.
  5. 05 On a wet day, keep one droppable stop Decide in advance which stop you will cut if it rains, so the day can be shortened without an argument in a car park.

The trap

Booking a departure before deciding what you want to see is how people end up on the wrong route, at the wrong station, on a road they did not plan to drive. Choose the scenery first, then the time.

Stopping time

How long to allow at Shengxing

Shengxing is usually treated as a quick photo stop and then rushed. It works better as the lunch and rest point of the day, and how long you need depends entirely on which of those two things you are doing.

  • Station building and platform only A short stop. Look at the timber building, walk the platform, and you have seen the essentials.
  • The old street as well Add a meal, browsing and a rest, and the stop naturally becomes the middle of the day. Weekend queues are normal, so leave margin.
  • Waiting for a rail bike departure If you are boarding from the Shengxing Station area, allow time to collect tickets and find parking before your slot, and let the old street fill whatever is left.
Weather

If it rains

Rain does not close the monument, but it does change which half of this itinerary is worth doing. Rather than cancelling the day, rebalance it.

  • Keep the indoor and sheltered stops — the woodcarving museum, the eating side of the old street — and shorten the rest.
  • Cut the brick steps and the long footpath sections first. Wet brick and stone here are genuinely slippery.
  • Fog reduces visibility on the mountain road faster than rain does. That affects driving, not just walking.
  • Whether the rail bike runs is the operator's decision on the day. Check their notice instead of assuming either way.
  • Take the forecast for the day itself, and treat a heavy-rain, strong-wind or typhoon warning as the signal to drop the furthest stop.

FAQ

Common questions

How much time do I need for the bridge itself?

Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the main area. That covers the viewing area, the broken arches and the steel bridge behind them. Additional viewpoints up the old line involve stairs and slopes and will add to that.

Can I do Longteng Bridge and Shengxing Station in one day?

Yes — they are the natural pair, and most visitors combine them. Both are on the same old mountain line story, and Shengxing also works as the lunch and rest stop. Adding the rail bike turns it into a full day rather than a half day.

Should the rail bike come before or after the bridge?

It depends on which station you board from. If you are booked from Longteng Station, the monument and your departure are in the same stretch of road, so they can be joined. If you are booked from the Shengxing Station area, do the monument and then drive on to Shengxing for the ride and lunch.

Is this a full day or a half day?

Without the rail bike it is comfortably a half day, or a relaxed day if you add Sanyi's woodcarving district. With a booked rail bike route, treat it as a full day: the departure time fixes the middle of the day, and parking plus lunch fill the rest.

What can I do if it rains?

Shift the balance toward indoor and sheltered stops — the woodcarving museum and the eating side of the old street — and shorten the brick steps and the long walks, which get slippery. Whether the rail bike runs is decided by the operator on the day, so check their notice rather than assuming either way.

Can I do this day trip without a car?

Yes, but plan the uphill and return legs first. Trains reach Sanyi Station on the main line; from there the monument and the stations are a few kilometres up a mountain road, reached by taxi, pre-arranged transfer or local bus. Choose one rail bike route at most, and agree the way back down early.
